On April 1, 2010 the Royal Netherlands Acedemy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW) organizes a symposium on evolutionary biology.
The role of evolution in health and disease is a relatively neglected area of research. In daily practice of clinical medicine virtual no attention is paid to the notion that modern human disease often has an important evolutionary component. This symposium is meant to explore the effects of evolution on
human health, including longevity, and will attempt to bring together the available information from different disciplines.

Westendorp, professor of Internal Medicine and scientific director of the Netherlands Consortium for Healthy Ageing (NCHA) will deliver the Dies Lecture of the Leiden University on 8 February 2010 at 15:00 hrs in the Pieterskerk in Leiden.
